Carol Sue (Phillips) Darnell, age 83, of Crittenden County, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at her daughter's home.
At the age of 17 she was hired to be a belt looper at the Sturgis Pant Factory. She worked for many years at the factory until she transitioned to Crittenden Heath and Rehab where she worked until her retirement. After her retirement, Sue continued to use her nursing skills and love as a home caregiver to many elderly in the community.
Sue also loved the outdoors. She took great pride in keeping her house and yard in immaculate condition. She was also a farmer, from cutting wood to fencing and tending to the cattle, there was nothing she couldn't do. The old timers in the neighborhood could sit on their porch and knew when it was Sue bush hogging on the tractor versus other men in the area. They would say she did it the best. Sue was a hard worker but also loved to have fun. She would race home with her night-shift co-workers, aways winning and aways laughing. Sue loved her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. The grands could do no wrong in her eyes.
Sue is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Chuck) Hinchee and Janet Phillips of Sturgis, KY; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; her twin sister, Connie Kay Rehbein of Shawneetown, IL; brother, Jackie Boy Warden of Shawneetown, IL and several nieces and nephews.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Opal Warden; two sisters, Barbara Jean Byrd and Janet Angelly; brother, Donald Warden and son, Ronnie Wayne Phillips.
Private visitation will be held.
Public graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Phillips Cemetery in Crittenden County. Officiating will be her nephew, Bro. Heath Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Phillips Cemetery c/o Sharon Martin, 198 James Conger Road, Marion, KY 42064
Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
